Automobiles are the largest source of air pollution in
the Bay Area, producing over six million pounds of
vehicle emissions every day. Automobiles pollute water
too. Run-off from highways and roads can seep into our
water systems and soil, impacting agricultural
production and the environment. Pollution is damaging to
our health and is especially harmful for children, the
elderly and those with respiratory ailments.
Commuting to work by driving alone generates a
substantial amount of this pollution. And it's not only
long-distance commutes. Did you know that for
short-distance trips (three - five miles), your car's
engine emits the most pollutants in the first 20 minutes
after a cold start? A cold engine releases more
pollution than a warm engine because it takes several
minutes for a catalytic converter to warm up and work
efficiently. It's the equivalent of driving your car at
40 - 50 mph for ten miles!
So how does your drive-alone commute measure up? Use the Environmental Calculator* to find out the number of pounds of Carbon Dioxide
(CO2)your car emits each day. These figures do not even include reactive organic gases, carbon monoxide emissions, nitrogen oxide, PM10, and sulfur dioxides.
* This calculator is based on the Environmental Protection Agency document EPA420-F-97-037.
** Monthly carbon dioxide emissions are based on the assumption of 23 working days in a month.
